Tibetan Singing Bowls
Tibetan Singing Bowls
Recently, singing bowls have gained popularity and interest as they've moved from esoteric items once kept from the knowledge of Westerners to instruments with both spiritual and secular uses.
According to tradition, the bowls are of seven metals, one metal for each planet.
Gold -The Sun
Silver - The Moon
Mercury – Mercury
Copper – Venus
Iron – Mars
Tin – Jupiter
Lead – Saturn
Traditionally, they are filled with water, rice and flowers and used for offerings. The bowl can be played either with the butt of the hand or with a wooden dowel, which is included. With a little practice one can make the bowl hum by dragging the dowel around the outside rim. The sounds produced by these bowls are very unique. Besides the primary tones, subtle harmonics are also produced giving these bowls a richer fuller sound. As the bowls were being made, mantras are recited, so their vibrations are absorbed in the metal to be released in the ethers whenever the bowls are played. Singing bowls have been used in religious and shamanic practices for well over 1500 years and have been associated with Tibetan Buddhism since the 8th Century. Tibetan Buddhists have long been known for their in-depth knowledge of sound and it effect on consciousness.
Our singing bowls are handcrafted in Nepal and are either hand-hammered or cast with hand etched mantras, among other various Buddhist or Hindu symbols. Each bowl has its own unique tone and the experience of playing one can be incredibly personal and stimulating.
