Medicine Buddha

The Medicine Buddha, the Supreme Healer, is honored as the dispenser of spiritual medicine that can cure spiritual, psychological, and physical disease. The practice of Medicine Buddha is not only a very powerful method for healing and increasing healing powers both for oneself and others, but also for overcoming the inner sickness of attachment, hatred, and ignorance. Thus to meditate on the Medicine Buddha can help decrease physical and mental illness and suffering. He is the form of the Buddha-nature that we aspire to realize in ourselves. He is holding in his lap a bowl of lapis lazuli, a gem known for it's healing properties. His right hand displays a sprig of arura- a tree fruit believed to be a panacea [cure-all] in the Ayurvedic system.
